Fair Housing
Equal Housing Opportunity — in practice, not just on the footer.
The law
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, familial status, or national origin. Many states and localities protect additional characteristics, including source of income, age, marital status and military status. We comply with all of them.
What that means when you work with us
- We will not steer you toward or away from any area based on a protected characteristic
- We will not answer questions about the “kind of people” in a neighborhood — we will point you to objective data and let you decide
- We will not accept an instruction from a seller to exclude a buyer on a protected basis, and we will withdraw from a listing rather than carry one out
- Our advertising describes property, not preferred occupants
- Reasonable accommodations and modifications are the buyer’s or renter’s right, not a favour
Reporting discrimination
If you believe you have experienced housing discrimination — by anyone, including us — you can file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development at hud.gov, with your state’s civil rights or fair housing agency, or with your local fair housing organisation. We will cooperate fully with any investigation.
Our own commitment
The Real Estate Collective is committed to the letter and the spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin.
